Don't focus on the negatives
When you’re having a bad day or week, it’s easy to focus on all the things that aren’t working out.
Our brains have a bias to remember the negative things. You may have even made great progress on your goal, but if something negative happens, it’s our human tendency to focus solely on what just went wrong.
When you’re feeling like this, you’ve likely encountered the 2 beliefs keeping you stuck in life.
Is the thought or belief that nothing ever changes, I’ll never make changes and reach my goals. I never change, I’ll never think, act, or believe differently.
Recognise that these beliefs aren’t true, and dismantling them takes a shift in focus.
I’m going to guide you through dismantling these beliefs so you can feel encouraged by your progress and inspired to keep going.
Thought 1: Nothing ever changes, my life is exactly the same
I recently faced a low moment and thought the same things during a pit of despair.
However, by reflecting on my life when I first started taking goal-setting seriously, I discovered evidence that proved my life had completely changed.
By comparing my life a year ago to today, I identified numerous positive changes and progress towards my goals.
Your exercise is to use my free printable to answer this question: How has my life changed in the past ___ (fill in the timeline, at least 6 months to a few years back)?
List all the ways your life has changed, noting major events and even seemingly small things.
As you list them, you’ll be reminded of the progress you’ve made and be inspired to believe in continuous positive change.
Thought 2: I'll never change
The second question is very similar but the nuance is this focuses on you as a person.
You may be getting frustrated because you have an area of growth where you feel you still have to put a lot of effort into but feel you should have sorted by now.
When you feel like this you are focusing on what you lack and forgetting all the ways you have changed and grown.
This time I want you to list all the ways you have changed as a person.
If it helps frame it like this:
Frame it by saying, “I used to do A (behaviour you want to change) in this situation, but now I do B (positive behaviour),” or acknowledge progress by saying, “I sometimes do A, but I’ve also started doing B.”
Celebrate the small areas of growth and recognize that incremental changes over time lead to a transformed life.
How do you feel after filling in these two lists? Hopeful? Grateful? Appreciative? Acknowledge and celebrate your growth!
