Make new years resolutions, Check! But what happens after January? Perhaps you make it to March, which research suggests is actually quite good going.
But I don’t want you or me to fizzle out or drift off course. The last thing I want is for us to get to December and wonder what happened to our year! What happened to those hope, dreams and plans? I’ve been there so many times, we all have. It’s so easy to let the busyness of life
creep in and take out time, energy and focus.
It’s my heart for us to not only dream but to actually get to live them out. I know I find I need help, cheering on and structure. I’m not a goal setting expert, I’m also walking my journey of growth and development, but I love to create, to make things easier for myself and share these with
you!
As I mentioned in a few posts back, my passion is around self development because the way you think will affect your life for negative or the positive, so with that in mind, let’s move in the positive direction. With my focus being self development, I believe goals and goal setting is really important to growth and achievement. With that in mind, my monthly freebies for my newsletter members will be monthly and weekly overviews with the focus on goal setting.
Let’s dig in!
Where do you
want to be 1 year from now? 5 or even 10 years on? Have you pictured that far?
I believe one of the most important parts to goal setting is first have a long term vision of the future. If you don’t know where you want to go it will be all the harder to make successful goals. Without a long term vision, you’re likely to get frustrated and fuzzy headed. Define your life and long term dream and you’ll find clarity and focus.
5 great prompts to help with this are:
What would I spend my days doing if I knew I could not fail?
What would I find fulfilment in doing even If there was no financial reward?
What do I want my legacy to be, what do I want people to say about my life after I’m
gone?
What strengths do I have? What do people often compliment me on or come to me for
advice on?
What brings me joy and lights me up?
Alternatively, you can work through the first part of the Dream & Goals Planner which goes deeper into these details. It can also be found in the Life Planner bundle.
Now that you’re feeling clearer on your long term vision its time to zoom into the finer details.
Choose up to 3 Goals to work on at a time. Picking less will help you focus, feel less overwhelmed and more motivated as you’ll see quicker results. For each goal write down 3 reasons why it’s important. Your why is going to be the fuel to keep you going in the tough times. Make them S.M.A.R.T goals.
You can break the goals down into a 90 day timeline and then monthly or 4 weekly (to fit the
90 days).
Each month or 4 week spurt pick one main outcome you’re working towards. That will be your
goal for the month. Ideally this goal will have a knock on effect on your other goals. This goal will be one that has the most impact and goes the furthest to bringing you closer to your goal.
Alongside your month’s goal select 3 focus areas. These may be tied together or could be spread across your 3 goals. Pop these down as your ‘Top Focus’. Jot down a couple of ideas to help you achieve your ‘top focus’ goals.
It’s good to have something to look forward to so make sure to put down some fun things for the month. Relaxing and enjoying yourself s really important to having a good sense of wellbeing. Put down any appointments you have or need to make. These can be goal related or life related.
On a calendar (I’ve got plenty of these in the member’s area) plot out your main activities for the month. I’ve also included one below. If you can focus on one type of activity at a time, you’re likely to get more work done. Lots of successful people do this and call it batching. Perhaps you focus on creating graphics for social media on a Monday, blog writing on Tuesday and videos on Friday etc.
Based on your month’s goals you can then plan out your week and schedule your activities. In
the member’s area you’ll find Octobers weekly planner for free.
You’re crystal clear on your long term vision, you’ve planned out your month and broken down your action steps into your weekly planner. Next, I believe it’s really essential to have someone to share your goals with that will keep you accountable. Perhaps it’s a few friends in real life or it could be an online mastermind. I’m part of some great Facebook groups that have really supportive environments where you can share your week’s goals. Going forward I’ll also be posting a goals accountability post each month on the first of the month on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
