A year or so after my wedding I did the big chop. If you're not mixed or black you may not be familiar with the phrase. It's cutting off your chemically straightened hair to grow your natural hair back. At this point I was done with living to western beauty standards. This was my first radical act of self love, of loving who creator God had made me. Lets not pretend that longer hair and straight hair has been coveted in our communities, cutting it all off to go curly was not a little thing. Especially 20 years ago. I didn't always love how my hair looked or came out in those early days. Especially as it reached the awkward length phase but I knew I wanted to be able to myself and be ok. Forward 20 years and I'm in a different place with my hair. Some days I have fluffy edges that aren't slicked down 😆 p.s if you want more info on loving your natural hair check out @paigelewinofficial Going natural was part of my healing and self acceptance journey. People still "wow" when they see old pictures of me with longer straight hair and I get it, but I'm in a place now where it won't affect how I feel about how my hair or the how I look today. Healing isn't an overnight thing. If you want someone to walk besides you in your healing journey whether it's faith based or not my doors are open.
